Large Globular Sea Urchin Test with Radiant Pink-Orange...

A Natural Specimen with Perfect Pentaradial Symmetry — This lot features a magnificent specimen of the shell, or more correctly the "test", of the Common Sea Urchin (*Echinus esculentus*). Originating from the waters of Cornwall, United Kingdom, this piece stands out for its remarkable size and exceptional state of preservation. It is not a fossil, but a contemporary natural history specimen that embodies geometric perfection and the complex architecture of the biological world, a true masterpiece of natural design. Direct observation of the shell reveals a globular, nearly spherical shape, whose surface is entirely covered by a dense and orderly network of tubercles. These small protrusions, arranged in precise and orderly rows, are the articulation points of the movable spines that covered the animal in life. The test’s structure highlights in an extraordinary way the pentaradial symmetry typical of echinoderms: five ambulacral zones, characterized by rows of pores, alternate with five broader interambulacral zones, radiating from the apex to the base. The coloring is especially fascinating, with warm tones ranging from pale cream to intense pink-orange, creating a delicate pattern of vertical bands that accentuate the three-dimensionality and complexity of its form. Biologically, the test represents the rigid endoskeleton of the animal, a protective structure made of calcium carbonate plates welded together. The ambulacral zones allowed the passage of the ambulacral pedicels, thin appendages used for locomotion, respiration, and food capture. The broad circular opening visible at the base is the peristome, which in life housed the complex masticatory apparatus known as the Aristotle’s lantern. At the apex, a smaller aperture indicates the position of the periproct, part of the organism’s apical system. The perfect integrity of this structure allows appreciation of every detail of an anatomy evolved over millions of years. This specimen is a collector’s item par excellence, a classical piece to be placed in a Wunderkammer, or 'cabinet of curiosities', where Renaissance men gathered the oddities and beauties of the natural world. Its mathematical perfection and aesthetic grace make it an object of study and contemplation. Today, a sea urchin shell of this size and quality is also a sophisticated decorative element, a natural sculpture capable of dialoguing with modern or classical interiors, carrying with it the echo of the ocean and the timeless charm of biological geometry. **Dettagli tecnici** Name: Sea Urchin Shell Classification: *Echinus esculentus* Provenance: Cornwall, United Kingdom Dimensions: 102 x 102 x 77 mm Weight: 51 g Conditions: Natural specimen in excellent state of preservation.
