LARGE BYZANTINE CIRCULAR MARBLE TABLE TOP WITH CHRISTOGRAM

Eastern Roman Empire, Early Byzantine Period, ca. 5th–7th century AD. A large and impressive Byzantine circular table top, carved from a single substantial piece of fine-grained, cream-coloured marble. The broad, slightly recessed central field is surrounded by a prominent raised circular moulding and a wide, gently sloping outer border, terminating in a finely carved beaded rim. The carefully executed concentric decoration emphasises the monumental proportions and refined craftsmanship of the piece. The outer border is further embellished with a circular medallion containing a carved Christian monogram, incorporating intersecting letters and a small cross above, forming a distinctive Christogram. This religious emblem reflects the widespread adoption of Christian symbolism in the decorative arts and architectural furnishings of the Early Byzantine period. The substantial proportions, elegant simplicity, and prominent Christian iconography suggest a prestigious furnishing, possibly associated with an ecclesiastical or high-status domestic setting. The marble surface displays natural veining, warm patination, and traces of age-related wear. A remarkable example of Early Byzantine marble craftsmanship, distinguished by its monumental scale, finely moulded borders, and Christian monogram.
