The present work depicts the racing yacht HMY Britannia among the fleet. Built for the future King Edward VII in 1893 and extensively raced by his son King George V, Britannia became one of the most celebrated racing yachts of her generation. It has been suggested that the large steam yacht lying offshore may be HMY Victoria and Albert III, George V's official Royal Yacht, which Maze is known to have depicted offshore during Cowes Regatta. Maze was a familiar figure at the regatta and is recorded as painting from the end of the Royal Yacht Squadron pier.
