Kuhrt model A - Calculator - 1920-1930

Kuhrt A – Antique mechanical calculator from Germany, 1920s – Working Description Rare Kuhrt A2 mechanical calculator, produced in Germany by Deutsche Rechenmaschinen-Werke AG, Leipzig, in the second half of the 1920s approximate. A specimen of the same Kuhrt A2 model is kept at the Pisa Museum of Calculating Instruments and is listed in the Italian General Catalog of Cultural Heritage (NCT 0901395135), where it is identified as a “Kuhrt A2 calculator,” attributed to Ernst Kuhrt and dated 1923. An interesting and rare example of the first generation of office mechanical calculators, characterized by the original Kuhrt system with axial-toothed wheels (Schwenksprossenräder), technically different from the more common Odhner wheel systems. The machine features a complete 8-column keyboard, multiple mechanical registers, a graduated upper carriage, and manual operation via a crank. Conditions and operation The machine is preserved in its original condition, with evident signs of use and patina consistent with its age. The mechanics have been checked and are functioning: * keys working and moving smoothly; * levers and mechanical controls functioning; * crank working and fluid; * mechanical registers operational; * the machine is capable of performing calculations. No invasive cosmetic restorations or repainting have been performed. Normal signs, scratches, and superficial abrasions due to age and use are present. There is also an original Italian dealer/importer plate affixed to the body of the machine, a particularly interesting element for the commercial history of the specimen in Italy. Serial number is not currently identified. Technical data * Brand: Kuhrt * Model: A2 * Manufacturer: Deutsche Rechenmaschinen-Werke AG * Place of production: Leipzig, Germany * Era: 1920s * Type: tabletop mechanical calculator * Actuation: manual, via crank * Keyboard: 8 columns * Mechanism: Kuhrt axial-toothed wheel system * Condition: working * State: original, with patina and normal signs of aging Kuhrt calculator production was relatively limited; specialist sources indicate about 2,500 Kuhrt machines produced in total, making these instruments of interest to collectors of the history of technology and calculating machines.
