Set of 2 Tulip armchairs – Design by Eero Saarinen – Produced by Knoll - 50th Anniversary (2006) We present at auction one of the most revolutionary creations of the 20th century: a set of two Tulip armchairs in the swivel version with arms, designed by the master Eero Saarinen and produced by Knoll in a special edition with commemorative branding on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their launch (1956-2006). A perfect synthesis between ergonomics and the sinuosity of forms, the Tulip chair redefined the perception of living space thanks to the introduction of its famous single-stem pedestal, here offered in the sophisticated and iconic combination with a blue fabric cushion. Design and history: The Tulip chair represents a fundamental turning point in the history of modern furniture, born from a famous formal intuition of its designer. Single-stem base: Saarinen stated his intention to definitively erase what he defined as the "ugly and confused labyrinth of legs" typical of traditional tables and chairs. He designed a fluid chalice resting on a single central stem, inspired by the slender silhouette of a flower. Sculpted shell: the design is characterized by the perfect junction between the flared base and the enveloping shell integrated with the arms. This sculptural graphic sign purifies the visual field of the dining room or study, giving a great sense of welcome. Auction lot conditions: The set of two Tulip armchairs on sale is in excellent used condition. Swivel structure: the shell with arms and the central aluminum-fused bases have been carefully cleaned and polished. They are in excellent condition, with only minor signs of wear consistent with the age of the lot. Functionality: the swivel mechanism is perfectly smooth and functioning.
