In 1926, he decided to settle permanently in France, the country where he would spend the rest of his days and where he would pass away. Despite this prolonged exile on French soil, his works retain a distinctly Dutch style, strongly influenced by impressionist currents. Terlouw is particularly noted for marine art and is widely recognized for his urban landscapes and picturesque canal scenes that traverse small towns. His canvases subtly capture views of busy ports, fishing boats docked, and very peaceful riverine atmospheres, enhanced by particularly moving plays of light. Beyond maritime and forest landscapes and snow effects, his repertoire includes intimate genre scenes and rustic interiors emphasizing family ties.
