Museum 17th-century tin cardinal’s plate – Hendrick de Mangeleer (Antwerp) – Sint-Elisabeth Gasthuis Diest – Documented / Nun’s piece Noordbrabants Museum Specifications Type of object: Cardinal’s plate / cardinal dish (cardinal's plate) Maker: Hendrick (Henricus) De Mangeleer I or II (Antwerp, active in the second half of the 17th century) Provenance / Ownership: Sint-Elisabethgasthuis in Diest (Flemish Brabant) Dating: Second half of the 17th century (c. 1660 – 1690) Material: Pure unalloyed tin (English tin) Diameter: 26.5 cm Condition: Very good, authentic state with original historical patina Auction description (Dutch) Exceptional museum-worthy 17th-century tin cardinal’s plate with a 100% confident attribution, rare institutional mark and direct museum literature concordance. This early plate has the characteristic 'cardinal model': a flat, shallow dish with a relatively wide rim (banner) and a reinforced, profiled edge. Marks & Stamps Front side (rim): Oval ownership mark: In a fine pearl border, the standing figure of Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, with the rim inscription: S. LYSEBETS. GASTHUYS. TOT. DIEST. (very sharp, deep cut). Side stamp: Crowned shield with the letter R (internal department or hall designation of the hospital). Back side (rim): City & Master mark: The Antwerp fortress in a laurel wreath with the master initials HDM (Henricus De Mangeleer). Content mark: Crowned double rose with the initials HDM (guarantee of fine, unalloyed English tin). Owner’s inscription: Contemporary incised letters IVK with a flamboyant motif. Literature & Museum Reference This specimen exactly corresponds to the plate described in the leading standard literature and museum collections: Documented: L. Lagae & L. Uyttendroeck (1972), no. 187. Museum concordance: Nun’s piece from the historical series of four cardinal dishes owned by the Noordbrabants Museum in ’s-Hertogenbosch (see inv. nos. 9335–9338 / cat. no. 58, with exactly the same stamps, letter R and engraving IVK). Condition In remarkably good, unpolished and honest state. The tin has a warm, deep lead-gray tint with slight historic scratches and casting/age traces appropriate for more than 330 years of intensive hospital use. No restorations, no fractures. A rare opportunity to acquire an early Southern Netherlands masterpiece for which the founder, the city, and the original institution are known in detail. Will be packed with extreme care and shock-resistant protection and shipped signed-for/insured with Track & Trace.
