Kant - Critik der practischen Vernunft

Kant, I. Critik der practischen Vernunft. Riga, Hartknoch, 1788. 292 Seiten Hldr. d. Zt. m. RVerg. u. Rückenschild (leicht berieben). Warda 112; Slg. Jahrhunderts zuordnen (Schopenhauer Umkreis, z. Bsp. Aloys Clemens?).- Auf dem Vorsatz mit handschriftlichem Besitzvermerk 'Hermann Brüdern', datiert 1971. Kant, I. Critique of Practical Reason. Riga, Hartknoch, 1788. 292 pages. Contemporary half-leather binding with re-indentation and spine label (slightly rubbed). Warda 112; Borst Collection 575. - First edition. - After the 'Critique of Pure Reason,' Kant's second major work, in which he derives the principles of morality solely from human reason (and not from a divine precept, as was the prevailing proposition at the time) and establishes the doctrine of the 'categorical imperative': 'Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.' - Copy with extensive handwritten marginal notes on approximately 10 pages of text, relating to Kant's philosophy and theories, e.g., 'Thus, it is determined by means of pleasure, but pleasure is not the determining ground'; 'The law determines the various driving forces of the human soul in such a way that the maxims maintain their suitability for general practical laws'; 'Perfection is a formal and not a material principle' and a few corrections, etc. (detailed list of marginal notes available upon request). - Unfortunately, we cannot attribute the manuscript to any 19th-century philosopher (Schopenhauer circle, e.g., Aloys Clemens?). - On the flyleaf, there is a handwritten ownership inscription: 'Hermann Brüdern', dated 1971.
