Josep Cruañas Fages (1942 - ???) - Puerto Impresionista

Title: Impressionist Harbor School: Catalan Contemporary School Author: Josep Cruañas Fages (Maià de Montcal, Girona, 1942) Style: Figurative post-impressionism with expressive and abstractizing accents Technique: Watercolor on paper mounted on board Circle and influences: Linked to the contemporary Catalan landscape tradition. His training with Joan Palau and Joan Sibecas, along with artistic proximity to Frederic Lloveras, influenced a painting based on the synthesis of forms, gestural freedom, and the capture of moist atmospheres. The work also reflects influences from European post-impressionism and lyrical abstraction. Port view resolved through a horizontal and balanced composition. In the foreground appears the surface of the water, built with broad washes in blue-gray tones, on which the reflections of boats and buildings are suggested. In the central plane several vessels are moored in front of a set of port buildings. A building in ochre tones, slightly displaced toward the right, introduces the main chromatic accent of the composition. In the distance, blurred mountains merge with a gray overcast sky, creating a misty, hushed atmosphere. The watercolor presents a loose, expressive execution, with areas of reserved paper, transparencies, fluid stains, and partially defined profiles. The limited palette of grays, blues, ochres, and blacks reinforces the sense of humidity and stillness characteristic of the artist's work. Signed “Cruañas” in the lower left corner. Biography of the author: Josep Cruañas Fages was born in Maià de Montcal, Girona, in 1942. He began his artistic training at the workshop of Joan Palau in Banyoles and later studied under Joan Sibecas in Figueres. After moving to Barcelona, he participated in various group exhibitions and held his first solo show in Vic in 1972. His production focuses mainly on urban landscapes, seascapes, and port views, characterized by misty atmospheres, neutral tones, and figuration close to abstraction. His work has been exhibited in Spain, Europe, and the United States, and is represented in various museum collections. The work is presented framed under glass, with a wide ivory-toned mat and a double inner edge. The ensemble is finished with a black, wide, stepped moulding, decorated with undulating geometric reliefs. The dark finish contrasts elegantly with the luminosity of the watercolor.
