John Wanamaker Royal Apartments White China Milk Pitcher with Blue Crest

This white ceramic milk pitcher or creamer features commercial-style decoration in blue. The front is decorated with a blue transfer-printed crest depicting a lion rampant holding a standard or staff above the arched text ROYAL APARTMENTS. The body is further accented with a double blue horizontal band below the rim and a single blue band at the base. The form consists of a bulbous body, a flared pouring spout, and a simple C-scroll handle. The underside of the pitcher bears a blue transfer mark that reads CHINA by JOHN WANAMAKER PHILA and NEW YORK, indicating it was retailed by the historic department store for a specific hotel or residential building. There is also a faint, light brown incised mark on the base in a three-pronged shape and a modern adhesive label reading RUBIN COLLECTION. The material appears to be a durable ironstone or vitrified porcelain typical of institutional hotel ware. Dimensions: Not provided.
