Jean Paul Kayser (1869-1942) - Südliche Landschaft

Attractive southern coastal landscape by the Hamburg painter Paul Kayser (1869–1942). The painting shows a Mediterranean promenade directly above a rocky coast. Lush southern vegetation, architecture, the bright sea, and the winding path determine the composition. Particularly appealing is the comparatively uncommon southern subject matter for Kayser, since the artist is primarily associated with Hamburg city, harbor, and Elbe landscapes on the art market. Around 1910 Kayser undertook trips to Italy and Switzerland. Stylistically, the present work can most closely be placed in the period around 1910 to about 1920 due to its light palette, loose brushwork, and southern lighting. A precise location is not recorded. Executed in oil on a solid painting support, presumably cardboard or carton. Since the back is completely sealed by an older frame cover, the exact painting support cannot be definitively determined without opening the framing. Clearly signed in the lower right: "P. KAYSER." The work is housed in a decorative frame that matches the image. Dimensions: Image size approx. 46 × 39 cm Frame size approx. 58 × 50 cm Condition: The painting is in good, well-kept condition. No noticeable damage or major visible defects. The frame shows only minimal signs of aging. The back is sealed by an older paper cover. The painting is offered with the frame. Provenance: West German private collection from which several Kayser works were acquired (also with estate notes from Friederike Kayser). Tax note: Sale is taxed under the differential taxation pursuant to § 25a UStG. VAT is not shown separately. Note on AI visualizations: Potentially shown living or presentation images were partially created with artificial intelligence and are for illustration purposes only. The decisive factors for subject, measurements, colors, condition, and execution are the original photos and the object description.
