Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac, Jean Goulu - Lettres de Phyllarque à Ariste - 1630

DESCRIPTION: I present to you at auction a truly exceptional acquisition opportunity: an extraordinarily rare work of very high valuation in the bibliographic market, of which there are currently no other copies available for sale nor recent records in the international market. It is the "Premiere Partie des Letres de Phyllarque a Ariste," written by the famous monk and Superior General of the Feuillants, Jean Goulu, under the pseudonym Phyllarque. Published in Paris in 1630 by Chez la veuve Nicolas Buyon (ruë sainct Jacques, à l’enseigne sainct Claude, & de l’homme Sauvage), this work represents the devastating frontal assault of the Church against the famous writer Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac (whom Goulu mockingly renames as "Narcisse"). A coveted book and impossible to find, essential for understanding literary wars, censorship, and the accusations of libertinism at the court of Louis XIII. IMMODESTY, HERESY, AND ATTACKS AGAINST BALZAC: THE CASUISTICS OF A BAROQUE SCANDAL In this famous pamphlet, Jean Goulu unleashes a merciless attack, analyzing and dismantling the figure of Balzac: + "Des Impudicitez, Saletez & Lascivetez" (Accusations of Lasciviousness and Moral Filth): Goulu openly accuses Balzac of sowing immodesty, obscene language, and moral corruption in French academies and salons. + "L’Eglise ne se contente pas de faire brûler les liures des heretiques" (The Burning of Heretical Books): An explicit invocation of inquisitorial fire and Church censorship, reminding that not only the books of heretics must burn, but also works that attack faith and morality. + "Mesdisances de Narcisse contre las Dames de France" (Defamatory Attacks): Denounces the calumnies and disrespect Balzac (Narcisse) would have directed against the honor, virtue, and beauty of the great ladies of the French court. ORNAMENTAL PROGRAM AND EDITORIAL CHARACTERISTICS + Historical Printing House of Paris: Printed on the emblematic Rue Saint-Jacques under the famous banner of the Wild Man (l’homme Sauvage). + Official apparatus with Royal Privilege: Includes the Extractum du Privilege du Roy originally granted in Paris in 1627 for the printing of this controversy. + Engravings and Baroque Typography: Rich woodcut headers, period ornaments, and historiated initials carved in wood. + Manuscript Ownership Inscriptions: Retains in the endpapers and inner pages period signatures and old ink inscriptions from its first owners (Ex Libris Joannis...).
