Arriving in Paris in 1924, he studied architecture before turning to painting and moving in Montparnasse. His distinctive style blends a rigorous geometric perspective with a dreamlike, desolate landscape and tragic visions of his era. He also enjoyed great success as a designer of scenery and costumes for theatre and opera. He was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1977.
