Jardinière - Fougère - Earthenware - Nevers (1740-1770)

Beautiful tin-glazed faience jardinière in a rectangular shape with beveled sides, resting on three small feet and equipped with two side handles. The piece is entirely hand-decorated with a grand feu polychrome design, predominantly blue, green, yellow, and manganese. The exterior wall features stylized vegetation composed of groves, foliage, and clusters of plants, with small castles in a landscape at the center. The interior is adorned with a stylized fern branch, enhanced with blue motifs. This decoration is particularly interesting for attribution to Nevers in the mid-18th century. A jardinière preserved at the Pôle culturel du Monastère des Ursulines, with very similar dimensions (34 × 23 × 10 cm), is dated around 1745-1770 and explicitly identified as an example of the Nivernais decoration “à la chicorée et à la fougère.” Era: 18th century, around 1745-1770 Origin: Nevers, France Material: tin-glazed faience Technique: grand feu polychrome painted decoration Decor: vegetation, landscape, stylized fern Dimensions: length 31.5 cm × depth 20.5 cm × height 10.3 cm Weight: 1.320 kg Condition: antique condition with wear from use, notably on the borders, feet, and edges, as well as a few small chips/scratches visible. No restorations. These marks should be considered when assessing the piece’s age. #madeinfrance
