antique Dutch red copper and brass doofpot (also known as asemmer), presumably from the 19th century. Features • Material: Made of red copper with contrasting horizontal brass bands and a matching brass lid with a knob. • Shape: The conical (cone-shaped) pot sits on three small feet and has two side handles and a corresponding fire tong/coal tong. • Function: In the past, this was used to airtight-smother burning wood or coal from an open hearth so the fire would go out and the embers could be reused as charcoal.
