Japanese Jizo, handmade statue - Stone, Cast Stone - Netherlands - 21st century

Japanese Jizo – cast stone Jizo, in Japan known as O-Jizo-Sama, is one of the four most revered bodhisattvas within Mahayana Buddhism. Especially in Japan, he holds a special place in daily life and the folk religion. Jizo stands for compassion, protection and guidance, and is regarded as the guardian of children, women, travelers and souls that are between two worlds. According to Buddhist tradition, Jizo helps deceased, miscarried and unborn children on their journey to the afterlife. Therefore at Japanese temples there are often hundreds of small Jizo figures and stone steles lovingly placed by parents and families as a sign of remembrance, hope and protection. In addition, one encounters Jizo in Japan along roads, on mountain paths and at crossroads. Travelers and pilgrims pray to him for a safe journey and protection along the way. Also in traditional Japanese gardens a Jizo stele has a deep spiritual meaning: it brings calm, harmony and a contemplative atmosphere. Because of its serene appearance and rich symbolism, this stele forms a special addition to a Japanese or Eastern garden. At the same time the statue is also very suitable indoors as a decorative and spiritual object, where it can radiate a sense of calm, protection and contemplation. This statue is handmade, cast stone (fine quartz sand) and hand-finished with gold color. It can be placed both indoors and outdoors.
