The work features a stylized, spotted cow standing at the water’s edge, its form perfectly mirrored in the blue expanse below. Cremer utilizes a bright, saturated palette of cerulean blue, emerald green, and ochre, with a singular pink blossom in the foreground adding a touch of delicate contrast to the powerful, flat fields of color. The piece is hand-signed and dated “Jan Cremer ’73” in pencil in the lower-right margin. In the center, it bears the handwritten title “on the waterside.”, and on the left, it is numbered 43/80, indicating its place within a limited edition of eighty prints. Cremer’s “cow” series is among his most iconic subject matter, representing a modern, provocative take on traditional Dutch landscape themes.
