James Dixon & Sons - Flask - Silverplated

Antique English hip flask with removable silver-plated drinking cup – circa 1900–1930 Special antique English hip flask, presumably produced by the renowned James Dixon & Sons company from Sheffield, England, during the first third of the 20th century. This elegant historical desk/hand-held item combines traditional British craftsmanship with a practical and refined construction. Construction and materials The flask consists of a transparent glass reservoir with rounded corners. The upper part is fitted with a black, finely ribbed covering, presumably made of leather. On the front there is a narrow vertical viewing window through which the liquid level remains visible. The lower portion is enclosed by a removable silver-plated drinking cup. This fits closely against the glass reservoir and can be used separately as a drinking cup. The flask also features a distinctive bulbous metal screw-cap with a hinged attachment. Historical markings On the bottom of the drinking cup there are several impressed marks: EPBM – Electro Plated Britannia Metal. A separate capital letter D. A presumed trumpet-shaped factory mark. The number 586A. The designation EPBM refers to electrolytically silvered Britannia metal. The design, construction, and marks show similarities to historic hip flasks by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield. attribution to this manufacturer is plausible, but not yet definitively confirmed. Historical background This type of hip flask was particularly popular during the Edwardian period and the early interwar period. Such flasks were used during travel, hunting parties, walks, and other outdoor activities. The combination of glass, leather, and silvered metal reflects the British tradition of high-quality personal travel accessories. Condition The flask is in authentic, used condition, with visible signs of age and use. The silver-plated parts show patina, superficial scratches, discolorations, and localized wear of the silvering. The black covering shows signs of use. The removable drinking cup and the closure mechanism are present. The seal in the cap shows age-related signs. Fluid-tightness has not been tested. There are no restorations evident based on the available photos.
