A beautiful antique jelly jar (also suitable as a sugar jar, mustard pot, or spice jar) from the late Victorian – early Art Deco period (circa 1900–1910). The glass inner vessel is made of white opal glass with a lovely light-blue / turquoise exterior. The glass bowl sits in a metal holder, which is openwork and silver-plated. This type of table silverware originally served to present (wet) mustard, jam, or other spices. The lid has a small notch so the spoon can remain in place when the jar is closed. The white and blue glass not only had a decorative function but also protected the metal from the acids in the food, which would otherwise corrode the silvered metal. The jelly jar is in excellent condition. The glass shows light wear. It sits on the top edge and at the edge where it drops into the holder. See photos. Total dimensions of holder and inner bowl: 14 x 10 x 10 cm (l x w x h). Inner bowl dimensions: 9.5 x 5 x 5 cm (l x w x h). It is a jelly jar with a distinctive design; an eye-catcher in any interior. The jelly jar is carefully packed and insured when shipped.
