Jacob Cats - Ouderdom, Buytenleven en Hof gedachten - 1710

Jacob Cats (1577–1660) – Ouderdom, Buyten Leven, en Hof-Gedachten, together with several other works – Amsterdam, Jacobus Conynenberg, [1710]. Attractive and richly illustrated early 18th-century collection of works by the celebrated Dutch poet and moralist Jacob Cats, bound together in one volume. The edition is undated on the title pages, but bibliographically dated to [1710], the year of the privilege. Published in Amsterdam by Jacobus Conynenberg. The volume contains several separately titled works, including Ouderdom, Buyten Leven, en Hof-Gedachten, Invallende Gedagten op voorvallende gelegentheden, Koninglyke Herderin Aspasia, Afbeeldinge van 't Huwelyk, en 't gene daar omtrent is, onder de gedaante van een Fuyk, Doodkiste voor de levendige, of Zinnebeelden uyt Gods Woord, and Tachtig-jarig Leven. Collation: (14), 248; 94; 82; 86; 32; 204; (4); 46 pp. The pagination corresponds with the recorded collation of this edition. Richly illustrated throughout with 46 smaller engravings and 4 large engraved plates, of which 2 are folding — 50 engraved illustrations in total. Especially noteworthy are the large allegorical folding engravings, including the remarkable marriage/fishing-net composition (Afbeeldinge van 't Huwelyk) and the striking emblematic imagery relating to mortality in Doodkiste voor de levendige. The volume also contains the fine engraved title/frontispiece J. Cats Buyten Leven op Zorgvliet, with the Amsterdam imprint of Jacobus Conynenberg. Several of the large engravings are signed D. Jongman fec. Bound in half leather with marbled boards, raised bands and gilt lettering to the spine. The binding shows age-related rubbing and wear, particularly to the boards and extremities, but remains solid. Internally a well-preserved copy, with occasional age-related spotting, browning and minor signs of use. The folding engravings show the expected folds. Complete according to the recorded pagination, with all sections present. A particularly attractive example of this extensively illustrated Cats edition, containing 50 engraved illustrations, including the impressive large folding plates.
