Vettriano’s works are heavily inspired by the 1940s and 1950s and feature elegant, often mysterious scenes in which people in formal dress are captured in cinematic moments. Although Vettriano was long ignored or criticized by the art world, he has achieved immense popularity and is among the most successful contemporary artists, especially due to the commercial success of his prints. One of his most famous paintings is “The Singing Butler” (1992), which depicts a stylized beach scene where a couple in evening dress and a tuxedo dance in the rain while a butler and a maid with umbrellas stand to the side. This image, which conveys a melancholic yet romantic atmosphere, is typical of Vettriano’s work. It recalls the film-noir aesthetics, where tension, mystery and restrained emotions are expressed through visual means such as light and shadow. In this regard, Vettriano’s work shows parallels with artists like Edward Hopper, who also often depicted isolated figures in quiet, seemingly fleeting moments of everyday life. While Hopper captured the urban loneliness of modern life, Vettriano tends to emphasize nostalgia and the glamour of past eras. Vettriano’s works are also strongly influenced by photography and cinema. His scenes often feel like stills from a film, frozen moments that hint at a story but never fully tell it. This cinematic approach, reminiscent of David Hockney’s work, demonstrates Vettriano’s ability to transform everyday moments into a mysterious and sometimes erotic atmosphere. Yet unlike Hockney, who often focused on color and form, Vettriano relies on a more realistic, almost illustrative rendering of his figures and scenes. Although Vettriano was rejected by many art critics, particularly because of the perceived commerciality and nostalgia in his works, he has nonetheless gained a large following. His paintings speak to a broad audience drawn to the romance and timeless quality of his images. The commercial success of “The Singing Butler,” which became one of the best-selling prints in Britain, reflects his popularity, even though critics often consider him kitsch and superficial. His paintings frequently feature elegant figures in interiors or at isolated locations, whose clothing and poses conjure up a bygone era. This nostalgia and stylization recall the works of Tamara de Lempicka, who likewise depicted glamorous, stylized figures in a luxurious, timeless world. Yet while De Lempicka’s work was more strongly influenced by Art Deco aesthetics, Vettriano’s style is more realistic and often hints at underlying emotional tension or unease between his figures. A recurring theme in Vettriano’s paintings is the suggestion of secrets and unfulfilled relationships. Figures in evening wear often appear distant, even when standing close together. This tension echoes the work of John Singer Sargent, whose portraits of the American upper class in the 19th century reveal subtle emotional restraint and complexity in relationships. Vettriano manages to tell emotional stories through the posture and gaze of his figures, shaped by loss, longing and unfulfilled love. In summary, Jack Vettriano remains a fascinating figure in contemporary art, whose works, despite critical rejection, forge deep emotional connections with a broad audience. His cinematic, nostalgic scenes, which often exude an atmosphere of mystery and romance, represent a unique blend of film-noir aesthetics, classical painting and timeless storytelling. While he has often been overlooked by the established art world, Vettriano has developed a distinctive visual language that has made him one of the best-known and most beloved artists of his generation.
