(◊) ITALY. Papal (States of the Church). Scudo, 1846-R. Rome Mint. Sede Vacante. NGC Unc Details--Reverse Cleaned. KM-1335; Ber-3295; Gig-2; Pag-302. Engraver: Niccolò Cerbara. Rare, with a low mintage of only 4,000 pieces. A breathtaking MS specimen with an original violet patina surrounding the radiant dove of the Holy Spirit on the obverse. The coin likely sat in a cabinet with the reverse sliding on felt whenever the drawer was pulled out. The reverse still retains beautiful details, luster, and color. Struck during the brief period of 'Sede Vacante' from 1 June to 16 June 1846, when Pope Gregory XVI died and Pius IX had yet to be elected. Cardinal Tommaso Riario Sforza led the administration during this time. Estimate: €700 - €1,000.
