Italian School, 17th Century - Susanna and the Elders

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 105 × 120 cm; framed: 126 × 140 cm. Relined. A biblical composition inspired by the episode of Susanna and the Elders, depicted through a scene of strong narrative and theatrical content. Susanna appears in the center, partially nude and wrapped in white and blue drapery, while the two elders lean over her from the left and the background, creating a composition of dramatic tension. The work is notable for the contrast between the intense reds of the men’s garments and the light tones of the female figure, as well as for the use of directed lighting that focuses attention on the main figures. The anatomical treatment, the staggered arrangement of the figures, and the scenographic character of the composition reflect formulas typical of 17th-century Italian Baroque painting. Unsigned. The canvas has been relined. Condition: generally good, with relining.
