Ippolito Caffi (1809-1866), After - Vedute veneziane

Pair of Venetian views – 19th century No signatures present Pair of paintings depicting views of the city of Venice, late 19th century. Oil on copper, executed with refined attention to the perspectival, architectural, and atmospheric rendering. The first composition offers a suggestive view of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute and the entrance to the Grand Canal, observed from the water. The monumental basilica dominates the scene with its great domes, while in the foreground a lively gesture of lagoon life unfolds, animated by gondolas, transport boats, and small figures. The wide sky, traversed by luminous clouds, occupies a significant part of the composition and helps to create that particular changeable atmosphere typical of the Venetian lagoon. The second work, instead, presents a view of the Grand Canal, with Venetian palaces along the banks and numerous moored and navigating boats. The perspective is constructed according to the traditional language of Venetian vedutismo, with the water used as a depth element and as a surface capable of reflecting sky, architecture, and vessels. Stylistically, the pair fits into the long-running fortune of 19th-century Venetian vedutismo, a genre that continued to look to the great masters of the 18th century, particularly Canaletto and Francesco Guardi, yet reinterpreting their language through a more romantic and 19th-century sensibility. The relation to the Canaletto tradition is evident in the rigorous perspectival construction and the precise description of the architecture, while the greater attention to atmospheric effects, to the vibrancy of light, and to the numerous small scenes belongs to the subsequent evolution of the genre. Of particular interest is the comparison with Ippolito Caffi (1809-1866), one of the leading interpreters of the Venetian veduta of the 19th century, who managed to overcome the coldness of the 18th-century veduta by introducing a greater sensitivity to light conditions, atmosphere, and time of day. The pair can also be associated with the works of the Grubacs, a family of vedutisti active in Venice in the 19th century, particularly important in preserving and reinterpreting the Canaletto tradition. Carlo Grubacs, active in Venice in the 19th century, indeed maintained the strict compositional frames of 18th-century vedutismo, enriching them with effects of light, sky, and motion within the scenes. Overall, the two paintings constitute a pleasant testimony to the international popularity of the image of Venice in the 19th century, aimed chiefly at the tastes of travelers and European collectors. The care given to architectures, perspective, boats, and small figures returns a lively and decorative representation of the Serenissima, in which the rigor of the great vedutismo tradition combines with a sensibility that is fully 19th-century."
