Ionia, Teos Tetartemorion Ca. 510-500 BC (No reserve price)

Ionia, Teos. Ca. 510-500 BC. Tetartemorion (Silver, 6.7 mm, 0.16 g). Obv: Head of griffin to left. Rev: Quadripartite incuse square with central pellet. Reference: SNG Kayhan 1495. Teos, one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League, was a coastal city with two harbours and the birthplace of the lyric poet Anacreon. Persian expansion in the sixth century BC prompted many inhabitants to migrate to Abdera in Thrace, though some later returned. The city became renowned for its sanctuary of Dionysus and, in the Hellenistic period, a prominent association of actors and musicians devoted to the god.
