Toutes les enchères / Ethnographie / Intricate Large Gorgonian Sea Fan Fan-Shaped Natural...
A Modern Wunderkammer - Sea Fan - Alcyonacea — This lot features a magnificent natural coral, commonly known as sea fan, originating from the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The specimen is mounted on an elegant handmade base with a contemporary design, turning it from a natural history relic into a true sculpture. Its most evident feature is the fan-shaped form, wide and extraordinarily intricate, which immediately draws the eye due to its size and structural refinement. Observed up close, the sea fan reveals an biological architecture of incredible perfection. Its structure develops from a central, more robust trunk, from which a dense network of interconnected branches emanates, creating a delicate organic lace. The color contrast is striking: the main branches present a dark, almost black shade, while the thinner terminations take on vibrant orange and golden hues. This bi-chromy, enhanced by a dark background, gives the entire composition depth and dynamism, highlighting every single detail of its complex weave. Sea fans are colonial organisms belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. Their iconic fan shape is not accidental but a sophisticated evolutionary strategy. The colony grows by positioning itself perpendicularly to the prevailing marine currents, thus maximizing the surface available for its countless polyps, tasked with filtering water to capture the plankton they feed on. The skeleton, composed of a flexible protein called gorgonin, provides the resilience needed to withstand the forces of the sea. This specimen perfectly preserves such a skeleton, a silent testament to life in the abyss. In addition to its indisputable scientific interest, this sea fan represents a superb collecting object and a highly impactful decorative element. It fits perfectly within the tradition of Wunderkammer, the Renaissance “cabinets of curiosities” where naturalia and artificialia were gathered to astonish and educate. Its dramatic presence makes it ideal for enhancing a study, a library, or a contemporary interior, where its organic form can engage in dialogue with stricter design lines, creating a rare focal point of natural beauty and refinement. The base, handcrafted in Italy, was designed to highlight the specimen without overpowering it. A solid block of light wood provides stability, while a satin-brass cylinder supports the sea fan, elevating it and giving it an almost museal aura. This mounting choice is not only functional but aesthetic, completing the transformation of the marine organism into a work of art. The preservation conditions of the sea fan are excellent, preserving the integrity of its delicate structure.
