Interesting two-day marine chronometer by Joseph Sewill, 61 Castle St, Liverpool, Maker to the Admiralty, with subsidiary address 30 Cornhill, London, No. 4047, circa 1876, signed 4" silvered dial with Roman numerals, outer minute track, fifty-six hour power reserve indicator over a constant seconds dial, gold spade hands, numbered beneath the rim 2583, brass full plate fusee movement with maintaining power, Earnshaw type detent escapement and compensated balance with a helical hairspring and diamond endstone, in a brass case with sliding winding hole shutter and gimbal mount within a 7" square brass bound ebonised three-tier case with a mother of pearl plaque inscribed 'MERIONETH 1876', with recessed folding brass side carry-handles; with outer wooden guard case (with winding key and case key) ** The Merioneth, an iron-hulled sailing ship built in November 1875, initially operated by Hughes & Co., registered out of the port of Liverpool. In 1905 it was sold to Motola, renamed Santa Felice and sold and broken up in 1922 ** with letter correspondence from the National Maritime Museum; also a a J. Sewill chronometer test certificate dated 17 April ** Joseph Sewill is listed as working from 30 Cornhill, London 1870-1890 and 61 South Castle Street, Liverpool 1845-1937
