Incunabula & Typography. [Meerman (Gerard)], Conspectus Originum Typographicarum, a Meermanno Proxime in Lucem Edendarum, first edition, s.l. [?Rotterdam], s.n., 1761, complete, collating: vi, 7-88pp, the first and last ten leaves or so affected by some toning from former damp, graduating and not affecting legibility of the text, otherwise the remaining contents are fresh and bright, tatty ffeps, defective late 18th/early 19th c speckled calf binding, attributed to Thomas Payne, boards bowed, textblock split and loosening, 8vo Rare. Meerman's privately printed bibliographical tract, Conspectus, outlined his arguments promoting the Dutch claim to the invention of printing by movable type. Specifically, he championed the theory that Lourens Janszoon Coster of Haarlem invented printing by moveable before Johannes Gutenberg.
