Ammonites played an important role in Earth's geological history, having lived for over 300 million years, from the Devonian to the end of the Cretaceous, about 65 million years ago, when they disappeared suddenly, along with many other animals and plants, due to a mass extinction event. In the Anti-Atlas mountain range, ammonite fossils can be found in many geological formations, including the Zagora Limestone, the Taroudant Limestone, and the Foum Zguid Limestone.
