(C.N.A.: Compagnie nationale des artistes français aux Indes) High-warp weaving, a carpet knotted in a symmetrical knot (known as a ghiordes knot or Turkish knot), with high-quality silky wool pile on a cotton ground. Central field: a background in shades of beige, gold and sand, centred on a multi-lobed oval medallion adorned with a generous bouquet of polychrome flowers (roses, foliage and delicate little blooms). The medallion is framed by elegant golden acanthus scrolls, volutes and stylised shell motifs at each end. Four spandrels, in pastel blue-green and very soft celadon, are adorned with flowering branches and bouquets of roses that stand out with a fresh, lively quality. The whole is encircled by a wide main border on a gilded ochre background, enlivened by a continuous frieze of foliage, scrolls, leaves and period geometric motifs, all finished with an outer braid in an old rose (terracotta) colour. The classically inspired, Louis XV-style design features a rich, symmetrical composition. The carpet has been cleaned. The chiselling with a bent chisel creates a relief effect and three-dimensional modelling characteristic of carpets of royal inspiration. Circa 1960/1965.
