Toutes les enchères / Tapis, Tapisseries & Textiles / Important Antique Karachov Kazak Rug, South Caucasus, late 19th century
Curated collection of antique, vintage and modern rugs Important Antique Karachov Kazak Rug, South Caucasus, late 19th century Size: 7 ft 3 in x 6 ft 1 in (2.2 m x 1.85 m) Provenance: New York private collector A powerful Karachov Kazak distinguished by the bold, highly organized geometry that makes this South Caucasian group immediately recognizable. The characteristic composition generally centers upon a monumental rectangular or octagonal device balanced by strongly articulated corner forms. Karachov Kazaks achieve an effect of extraordinary visual strength through a limited vocabulary of large geometric motifs and contrasting colors. Their drawing can appear strikingly modern despite being rooted in the village weaving traditions of the nineteenth-century Caucasus. The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves a mid- to late-nineteenth-century Karachov Kazak from the celebrated James F. Ballard Collection, demonstrating the group’s established position within major collections of Islamic textile art. The Met’s Karachov Kazak Condition Request Condition Report Lot #425 is good condition. The pile is mostly full and even, with minor areas of oxidized brown visible.
