Important and Early Noel Rockmore, Self Portrait, New York City, Age

Noel Rockmore American/Louisiana, 1928-1995 "Self Portrait, New York City, Age 21" oil on canvas 1951, signed and dated upper right, signed, titled and dated en verso, framed. Note: Born in 1928, the child of artists in New York City, Noel Rockmore was considered a prodigy at both the violin and art at a young age. At eighteen, Rockmore painted a self-portrait which was "the first oil he considered successful." This work would begin Rockmore's lifelong experimentation and exploration of the self-portrait, resulting in a series of paintings that document his location, appearance and artistic style throughout his life. The important early self-portrait offered here features Rockmore at twenty-one years old and was created the same year he married Elizabeth Hunter. It was painted just three years after famed art collector Joseph Hirschorn bought the first of many of Rockmore's works for his collection which marked the beginning stages of his series of New York successes including having his work exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Whitney Museum.
