Ilkhanate. Abu Sa'id Bahadur Khan (1316-1335 AD). Type H, Khani years 33-35 (1332-1335 AD). 2 Dirham (Silver, 20 mm, 2.8 g). Obv: السلطان العادل / ضرب / [Bu Sa'id in Uighur-Mongol script] / [mint] / بهادر خان خلد ملكه ("The just Sultan, struck at [mint], Bahadur Khan, may his kingdom be perpetuated"), flanked by endless-knot ornaments. Marginal legend with mint and Khani year. Rev: لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله صلى الله عليه ("There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God, may God bless him") in Kufic in the centre; ابو بكر عمر عثمان علي (Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman, 'Ali) in the margin, separated by stars. Reference: Album, A Checklist of Islamic Coins, type 2218.1. Rare. Abu Sa'id became Ilkhan in 1316 as a boy, while the emir Chupan held real power until Abu Sa'id had him killed in 1327. His reign brought a lasting peace with the Mamluks of Egypt, sealed in 1320, and the coinage of his later years was dated in the Khani era. When he died in 1335 without an heir or appointed successor, the Ilkhanate broke apart into rival kingdoms contested by families such as the Chupanids and Jalayirids, ending unified Mongol rule in Iran.
