Rolling Stone magazine ranked them second on its list of the 20 greatest duos of all time. Beginning in 1960, they performed live as the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, backed by Ike Turner's band, the Kings of Rhythm, and backing vocalists called the Ikettes. The duo was once considered "one of the best, longest-lasting, and potentially most explosive of all R&B ensembles." They were also known for their high-energy live performances, comparable only to those of James Brown and The Famous Flames. Their early works, including "A Fool in Love", "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "I Idolize You" and "River Deep - Mountain High" became important references in the development of Soul music, while their later works were known for their wild interpretations of arrangements of Rock classics such as "Come Together", "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Proud Mary", the latter of which would win them a Grammy Award. Anna Mae Bullock (Brownsville, Tennessee; November 26, 1939 – Küsnacht, Zurich; May 24, 2023), known as Tina Turner, was a Swiss-American singer, songwriter, and actress. Dubbed "the Queen of Rock & Roll," she enjoyed a musical career that spanned more than five decades. She was considered one of rock's leading songwriters, inspiring several generations of rock & roll and pop stars. She sold over 180 million albums and singles worldwide, making her one of the best-selling recording artists in history. She began her musical career in the mid-1950s as a performance singer with her husband, Ike Turner, a songwriter and leader of the band Kings of Rhythm. Tina began recording in 1958 under the name Little Ann. Her debut as Tina Turner was on the single "A Fool in Love" in 1960 as one half of the musical duo Ike & Tina Turner. Her rise to fame continued with a string of notable hits as part of the duo, including "River Deep – Mountain High," "Proud Mary," and "Nutbush City Limits," a song she wrote. In total, she achieved 20 hits between 1960 and 1975. After several years of inactivity, Turner moved to Las Vegas, where she relaunched her musical career, debuting as a solo artist in 1984 with her album Private Dancer, produced by Mark Knopfler, which propelled her back to stardom. The album included the song "What's Love Got to Do with It," which earned her two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and marked her first and only number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It also contained the international hits "Let's Stay Together" and "I Can't Stand the Rain," solidifying her solo debut. She expanded her career into film in 1975 with an appearance in Ken Russell's Tommy, in 1985 with the film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (to which she contributed the hit song "We Don't Need Another Hero"), and again in 1995 with a minor role in Last Action Hero. Her own life was portrayed in the 1993 film What's Love Got to Do with It, with Angela Bassett playing her. In both the film and her autobiography, I, Tina, Turner revealed that she was kicked out of her marriage to Ike Turner due to domestic violence, an experience that influenced her music and helped bring this type of violence to light in the 1980s. In 1985, Turner embarked on the Private Dance Tour, which became the second highest-grossing tour by a female artist of the 1980s, surpassed only by her Break Every Rule world tour, which in 1987 became the highest-grossing tour by a female artist of the 1980s and set a Guinness World Record for the largest paid audience at a concert at that time, with 180,000 people. In 1996, she released her album Wildest Dreams, marking her last entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with the single "Missing You." That same year she embarked on the Wildest Dreams Tour, which became the highest-grossing tour by a female rock singer in the 1990s. In 1999 she released her final studio album, Twenty Four Seven, and in 2004 she released the successful compilation album All the Best.
