Iconic Sikhote-Alin Iron Meteorite Fragment - Naturally...

Russia - 1947 — An fascinating fragment of the famous Sikhote-Alin iron meteorite, found after the historic fall of February 12, 1947. This specimen shows the typical characteristics of an iron meteorite, with notable density and an outer surface intensely sculpted by passage through the Earth’s atmosphere. Its morphology is the result of a thermal ablation process, which created grooves and ridges unique, testifying to the cosmic journey and the violent impact. The Sikhote-Alin meteorite is classified as an octahedrite IIAB, a type of iron meteorite composed mainly of iron and nickel, with traces of other elements such as cobalt and phosphorus. Its internal structure, if cut and polished, would reveal Widmanstätten patterns, crystalline formations that develop only under extremely slow cooling conditions typical of the cores of primitive planetary bodies. The fall of Sikhote-Alin was one of the most spectacular and well-documented meteorite events in recent history. Eyewitnesses described a fireball brighter than the sun that crossed the sky over the Sikhote-Alin mountains, followed by a deafening roar and a rain of metallic fragments. This event not only provided a vast amount of material for scientific study, but also left numerous impact craters, some of which are still visible today. Owning a fragment of Sikhote-Alin means possessing a piece of cosmic history, a messenger from deep space that tells us about the origins of our solar system. It is an object of great scientific interest and a coveted collector’s piece for its documented provenance and intrinsic aesthetics. This specimen is ideal for collectors, educational institutions, or simply for those who wish to add a touch of extraterrestrial wonder to their cabinet of curiosities.
