Icon - Christ Pantocrator - Wood

Late 18th century. Central is the monumental, powerful image of Christ Pantocrator in the Orthodox canon. With his right hand he performs the blessing gesture; in his left hand he holds the opened Gospel book with Church Slavonic text from the Gospel of Matthew. What is special about this exemplar are the connecting border figures (polya) that were added at the request of the original patron. Left border: A beautifully detailed Guardian Angel with a crucifix close to the chest and the wings with remnants of gold leaf. Right border: The holy figure depicted—a large depiction of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, a monk. Both act as intercessors for the family. The woodworm is no longer active and was treated years ago. The icon still weighs heavily. The paint is rock-hard and does not flake anywhere; it is in excellent condition. Private collection in Belgium
