Toutes les enchères / Autres / Humppila - Tauno Wirkkala - Bowl - Revontulet - Crystal - Northern Lights
Vintage brutalist art glass bowl Revontulet 'Northern Lights' by Tauno Wirkkala, Finland. The exterior built from jagged upward-spiking ice crystal formations in thick cast glass, graduating from deep amber at the base through lighter amber to clear at the tips, the interior is smooth and polished. Tauno Wirkkala designed the Revontulet series for Humppila Glassworks in 1972, and produced continuously until 1987. Revontulet is Finnish for Northern Lights, the design references sheets of aurora suspended in the sky, the spiked perimeter of the bowl reading as frozen light caught mid-movement. Tauno Wirkkala is the brother of Tapio Wirkkala, one of the most celebrated Finnish designers of the 20th century, and shares the same formal precision and deep engagement with glass as a sculptural material. Humppila Glassworks was founded in 1952 in Finland by the Helander brothers and built its reputation on heavy, complex art glass of this type. • Designer: Tauno Wirkkala. • Maker: Humppila Glassworks, Finland. • Series: Revontulet (Northern Lights), 1972–1987. • Style: Finnish Art Glass, Brutalism. • Material: Cast crystal glass, amber to clear gradient. • Condition: Excellent, no chips or cracks, original Humppila sticker present. • Dimensions: Ø24 x H14 cm.
