HUGO (Victor). *The Hunchback of Notre-Dame*. Fourth edition. Paris, Charles Gosselin [Cosson Printing House], 1831. 2 in-8 volumes, glossy brown calfskin, different embossed designs on the covers and spine, gold-edged interior, pink moiré lining and endpapers, untrimmed, cover and spine, half-calf slipcase decorated with an embossed design, slipcases (L. Dézé). First edition of Victor Hugo’s most famous novel. Fictitious notation of “fourth edition” on the title pages. A copy bound by Louis Dézé in a unique binding characteristic of his style: it is adorned with embossed leather designs depicting various characters and scenes from the book, with those on the covers featuring Esmeralda and Quasimodo. Pages 1–2 (half-title “Book One”) are missing from Volume I. Volume I: 2 leaves (pp. 49–50 and 217–218) on thinner paper; the leaf corresponding to pp. 99–100 (half-title “Book Two”) is incorrectly bound between pp. 110–111. The title of Volume I and 4 other leaves have been restored in the margin. Cover is very soiled and restored (with occasional pen touch-ups); the spine has been remade to look like the original for Volume I. The lining of the covers is discolored.
