1897 HSBC $10 Specimen! HONG KONG (SAR). Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. 10 Dollars, 1.9.1897. P-143s. KNB34e. Specimen. PMG Extremely Fine 40. Printed by Barclay & Fry Ltd. Handwritten 'CANCELLED'. Printed signature of Jackson at lower right. Blue and salmon coloured inks are found on the obverse. The reverse shows a red coat of arms at centre, with the bank name surrounding the design, and with counters at left and right. PMG Comments "Printer's Annotation, Staple Holes." An iconic two colour 'Cheque' design, so called because of their similarities, from the closing years of the 19th century. Moderate traces of handling with great preservation of colours and non negative comments from PMG. One of just four notes graded by PMG at the time of cataloguing and very rare. A rare and wonderful specimen of this short lived type issued from 1893 to 1898. By 1893, it became common practice to fully print the date and the Chief Manager's signature, while still allowing the Chief Accountant to hand sign the notes. Unfortunately, these notes were heavily forged, as evidenced by the number of contemporary forgeries extant (an example which is being offered in the next lot), which resulted in their short issue life. The Bank therefore made the decision to commission Bradbury and Wilkinson to produce a new series from 1900, which still uses the two colour design but with far more complex engraving in the underprint. This series is colloquially known as the 'Text Underprint' series, and some examples are offered in later lots. Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000. Provenance: From the Grass Unweeded Collection. 1897年匯豐銀行拾圓樣票！ 1897年香港上海匯豐銀行拾圓。樣票。 由Barclay & Fry Ltd.印製。手書"CANCELLED"（作廢）。右下方帶昃臣印刷簽名。正面以藍色及橙粉色油墨印製。背面中央為紅色銀行徽章，周圍環繞銀行名稱，左右兩側為面額框。PMG備註"印刷廠註記，釘孔"。19世紀末標誌性雙色"支票式"設計（因外觀形似支票而得名）。帶經手痕跡，色彩保存極佳且未獲PMG負面評語。編纂圖錄時PMG評級紀錄中僅得4枚，極為罕見。此版別於1893至1898年間短暫發行，本枚為珍罕絕倫之樣票。自1893年起，鈔票普遍改為全印刷日期及總經理簽名，但仍保留總會計師手簽。遺憾的是，此版鈔票遭大量偽造（現存眾多同時期偽鈔可證，下一拍品即有一例），導致其發行壽命短暫。因此匯豐銀行決定自1900年起委託Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co.印製新系列，該系列沿用雙色設計，但底紋雕刻繁複得多，俗稱"字底"系列，後續拍品中亦有呈獻。
