| HOLLENBERG, FELIX (1868–1945), Expansive River Landscape with Poplars in the Evening Light, 1905 Oil on mahogany panel. Signed and dated lower right: Felix Hollenberg 1905. Housed in a period molded gilt wooden frame. Felix Hollenberg is regarded as one of the most sensitive exponents of South German plein-air painting and etching at the turn of the 20th century. Following his studies at the academies in Düsseldorf and Stuttgart, he devoted himself to atmospheric landscapes of the Swabian Jura and the river valleys of southern Germany. Executed on a finely grained mahogany panel, this painting from 1905 is distinguished by its panoramic sense of space and its masterful evocation of the tranquil atmosphere of evening. In the foreground, two tall poplar trees create a striking vertical counterpoint to the gently rolling hills through which a calm river winds. With fluid brushwork and a subtle palette of earthy greens, ochres, and delicate pink and golden tones in the evening sky, Hollenberg achieves a composition of remarkable serenity and natural harmony. Dimensions: Panel: 46 × 58 cm. Framed: 65 × 45 cm. Condition: Original overall condition. The mahogany panel is very well preserved, remains flat, and is structurally reinforced on the reverse. In the upper area of the sky there is a localized, age-related paint-layer separation with minor paint loss and fine craquelure. SHIPPING TO THE USA MUST BE ARRANGED BY THE BUYER.
