HOBSBAWM (Eric) & WEITZMANN (Marc). — 1968, Magnum Around the World. Paris, Hazan, 2008. Large quarto, illustrated red publisher’s hardcover, 260 pp., numerous black-and-white photographs, often full-page or double-page spreads. ISBN 978-2-7541-0290-2. A new edition of this important photographic overview of the year 1968 as seen through the eyes of the photographers of the Magnum agency; the original edition was published by Hazan in 1998. This 2008 edition reproduces the original work, with the exception of the photographs by Raymond Depardon, which were removed at the photographer’s request. The texts are by historian Eric Hobsbawm and Marc Weitzmann. The book brings together approximately 250 photographs documenting the major political, social, and cultural events of this pivotal year: the Vietnam War and the Tet Offensive, the civil rights movement in the United States, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, the Biafran War, the Prague Spring and the Soviet invasion, student protests, the American counterculture, the Olympic Games and the massacres in Mexico City, and, of course, May 1968 in Paris. The book’s strength lies above all in the exceptional quality of the photographers featured: Henri Cartier-Bresson, René Burri, Bruno Barbey, Eve Arnold, Elliott Erwitt, Martine Franck, Bruce Davidson, Philip Jones Griffiths, Josef Koudelka, Marc Riboud, Inge Morath, Don McCullin, Thomas Hoepker, Leonard Freed, Guy Le Querrec, Dennis Stock, among others. A true Magnum collective album, where historical reportage stands alongside images that have become emblematic of 1960s culture. The photographs, remarkably highlighted against a black background, capture political violence as well as artistic effervescence and changing social mores. Copy in good condition. Slightly scuffed red hardcover, with a few small signs of wear visible on the covers and corners; interior is fresh.
