[HEURES de ROUILLE]. Hours in French and Latin for use in Rome, corrected and expanded to include several supplications and prayers. With new illustrations, each placed in its proper place. Lyon, Guillaume Rouillé, 1548. 8vo, contemporary Lyon binding in fawn calfskin, covers entirely adorned with a very elegant interlaced design painted in white, blue, green, and brown wax, a large central oval, itself highlighted with color and adorned with small gilded scrolls, from which fine arabesques branch out, intertwining across the rest of the decoration and ending in gilded fleurons accented with blue wax; spine without raised bands, featuring panels alternately decorated with gilded cross-hatching and a gilded scroll pattern; edges gilded and chiseled. First edition, remarkably illustrated in the first print run with 14 large, finely wood-engraved plates, considered “the masterpiece of Pierre Eskrich, early style” (Baudrier, *Bibliographie lyonnaise*). In addition, each page features rich borders with motifs of grotesques, mascarons, caryatids, and arabesques—numbering some forty different types—all formed by the assembly of four woodblocks, some bearing the artist’s initials, PV (Pierre Vase). Along with Alciat’s *Emblèmes*, published shortly before in that same year of 1548, this *Book of Hours for Use in Rome* marked the beginning of both Guillaume Rouillé’s editorial partnership with the printer Macé Bonhomme and his collaboration with the man who would become his principal illustrator, the German-born, Paris-raised painter and engraver, Pierre Eskrich, known as Pierre Vase (1520–after 1590), who had just arrived in Lyon. Rouillé’s aim was to equip himself to compete with the formidable duo formed at the time in Lyon by the publisher Jean de Tournes and his star illustrator Bernard Salomon. The publication of a book of hours—a specialty almost exclusively reserved for Parisian publishers since the dawn of the illustrated book in France—served this purpose, allowing him to forge a reputation as an innovator in the City of the Gauls. In fact, while the cycle of illustrations here follows that of the Parisian editions, the style is radically different, creating in particular “an atmosphere of omnipresent tension through the characters’ postures and expressions” (Mortimer (R.). Harvard College Library. French 16th-century books, no. 311, 1551 edition in Spanish). This *Heures de Rouillé* was reprinted several times, but this first edition, dated 1548 and co-authored by Guillaume Rouillé and Macé Bonhomme, is extremely rare. Baudrier was unable to identify any complete copy bearing Rouillé’s name, and it is possible that ours is the only known copy in this condition.¹ An exceptional and superb copy, bound strictly contemporary in a very beautiful binding decorated with wax-painted interlacing, remarkably well-preserved. Skillful restorations to the upper joint, as well as to the head and foot caps and the corners. Slight signs of wear on the spine. 1- “The only known copy from this date, bearing the name of G. Rouillé—with half the volume missing—was part of the collection of the late Mr. Jubin of Lyon, who, in keeping with his deplorable habit, tore it apart and pasted it into his albums” (Baudrier, *Bibliographie lyonnaise*, IX, p. 145). According to a more recent source (*Catalogue Collectif de France*), there is reportedly another copy at the Municipal Library of Douai. Acquired by Émile Rossignol in 1953.
