They are not diamonds; the name 'diamond' owes its origin to their clarity and well-formed faces. Since the first finds were in the village of Middleville or in the town of Little Falls, the crystal is also referred to as Middleville Diamond or Little Falls Diamond. Herkimer diamonds gained wide recognition after workers discovered them in large quantities while mining dolomite in the Mohawk River Valley in the late 18th century. Geologists discovered exposed dolomite at outcrops in Herkimer County and began mining there, which led to the designation 'Herkimer Diamond'. Double-terminated quartz crystals are found worldwide.
