Henry Moore OM CH FBA (British, 1898-1986) for Ascher a 'Family Group' fabric

circa 1949, serigraphy silk screen, 87 x 86cm including frame, Established in 1942 by Czech émigrés Zika and Lida Ascher, Ascher Ltd collaborated with prominent artists, including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Graham Sutherland, Ben Nicholson, John Piper, Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso. These partnerships challenged traditional boundaries between art and industry through limited-edition silk scarves produced between 1944 and 1953. Each artist designed a scarf measuring no more than 36 inches square (90 centimetres), typically produced using serigraphy, a form of screen printing. The designs debuted at the 'Britain Can Make It' exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1946, introducing vibrant colours and bold patterns to post-war fashion. Their popularity grew following an exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery in 1947 and a subsequent international tour, establishing the scarves as significant early examples of art created for a mass audience. Moore developed several designs for Zika Ascher during the war, when travel restrictions limited his work on large-scale sculptures. Using wax crayons, pen and ink, gouache and watercolour, he created richly textured compositions that translated into screen-printed fabric motifs. His 'Family Group' design reveals the relationship between textile and sculpture: repeated motifs introduce movement, rhythm and abstraction, offering a fresh interpretation of the sculpture's organic forms. Condition Report, Condition Report, Structurally, the lot appears sound. There is a chip to the black frame to the bottom right side. The silk appears to have been laid down and attached to the backing, but it has not been examined out of frame. The colours appear bright. Some looseness to the frame.
