HENRY MOORE (BRITISH 1831–1895), MID-CHANNEL, EVENING

HENRY MOORE (BRITISH 1831–1895) MID-CHANNEL, EVENING Oil on canvas Signed and dated '1879' (lower right) 24.5 x 40cm (9½ x 15½in.) Exhibited: The Fine Art Society, March 1970, no. 1117 Condition Report: The canvas has been lined and is providing good support. Abrasions and minor flecks of paint loss to the extreme edges commensurate with rubbing to a frame. Areas of fine craquelure and superficial scratches are present but the surface appears to be stable overall. Some yellowing varnish is visible, most notably to the left extreme edge, along the lower edge and over the '9' in the date. Inspection under UV reveals large areas of restoration to the upper centre of the sky as well as to the upper right and left quadrants. Further retouching is evident along the left and lower extreme edges and scattered across the sky and sea. There is also strengthening to the ships. The image presents a cloudy varnish and surface dirt.
