Henry de MONTHERLANT (1895–1972, writer and member of the Académie française) / Hand-signed typewritten letter, 1 page, quarto, Paris, March 3, 1967, to Louis MERLIN (1901–1976, journalist, founder of Europe 1): "Since I write neither to make money nor to be read, but simply because it amuses me, your views on how to attract large audiences and funding (particularly in the theater) interest me because you’ve been directly involved in the process, though they don’t resonate much with me"; “I am much closer to Section 1 of your book. For a long time—since 1932, and then since 1940—I have despaired of my contemporary compatriots"; "The notebook of mine that you were kind enough to quote is the last work in which I will allude to them. My future works will be solely works of fiction."
