Toutes les enchères / Autres / Henri Welter (1886-1948) - Hollands landschap met schepen

A Dutch polder landscape with ships, by the painter Henri Welter (1886-1948). Circa 1930. Oil on canvas. Signed lower left: H. Endlich (pseudonym). Henri Welter was born in The Hague on 13 July 1886 and died in The Hague on 5 July 1948. By profession Henri was a sculptor and plasterer until his bankruptcy in 1912. Thereafter Henri went into the art trade. Henri married Cornelia van Turnhout on 19 July 1916; she was born in Boxtel on 12 December 1893 and died in The Hague on 5 September 1973. Henri started as an art dealer from his home at La Reykade 8 (now La Reyweg 16) in The Hague. From 25 March 1931 to 18 March 1934 he operated an art shop at Fahrenheitstraat 770 in The Hague, at the corner with Larixlaan, called ‘De Kring’. He sold paintings from 1940 to 1948 from his home or from Café Schieland in Rotterdam. As a trader he sold by appointment at customers’ homes, because from 1 June 1940 the German occupier had leveled the building at Fahrenheitstraat 770 to construct the Atlantic Wall (Atlantic Wall between Norway and Spain). This marked the end of shop sales. Henri was buried in the Oud Eik en Duinen cemetery in the family grave with his mother and brother Willem. Henri was the 4th child in the family. Henri Welter signed his paintings with the following signatures: H. Welter4: as the 4th child in the Welter family; H. Endlich: the name of his mother. This signature was used most often. Condition: the work has two old restorations and is in good condition. This artwork will be carefully packed and shipped.
