Henri-Victor Delavelle (1868 - 1919) - Scena Classica - Dafni e Cloe

AUTHOR Henri-Victor Delavelle was born in Besançon in 1868 and died there around 1918–1919. Raised in a cultured bourgeois family — son of the city’s mayor Victor Aristide Delavelle and uncle of the painter and Benedictine nun Geneviève Gallois — he trained within the Caudine (French) academic milieu of the late 19th century, straddling his native art school and the Parisian scene. From the end of the 19th century to the early 20th, alongside easel painting he pursued an intense activity as an illustrator for prominent publishers such as Flammarion and E. Bernard, collaborating on volumes by famous authors such as Jean Richepin, Willy, Alfred Rambaud, and Jean Bertheroy. His poetics embody the eclectic taste of the Belle Époque, merging academic classicism, Symbolist suggestion, and the linear elegance of Art Nouveau. Delavelle’s production ranges from historical-mythological and literary scenes — animated by processions, banquets in ancient Greece or Rome, and pastoral idylls like Dafni and Chloe — to the luminous en plein air painting of the French Riviera (Èze, Nice, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat). Technically, he favored oil on small to medium panels for narrative sketches and illustrations, resolved with a fluid, concise, and theatrical touch, reserving oil on canvas and watercolor for landscape views and larger compositions. A refined, niche artist on the fin-de-siècle panorama, Delavelle is represented in public collections mainly through his editorial and graphic work, preserved in prestigious European archives such as the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. His paintings on canvas and panel are almost exclusively kept in private collections — particularly French and Italian — where his classical-subject studies and Mediterranean views continue to be highly appreciated for their fresh execution and evocative charm. DESCRIPTION "Classical Scene - Dafni and Chloe", oil on panel, 22x27 cm, signed lower left, datable to the 1910s. Provenance: Galleria Daniela Balzanetti, Milan. The work translates in paint one of Henri-Victor Delavelle’s dearest literary themes, inspired by the famous pastoral novel of Longo Sofista and reinterpreted according to a refined Symbolist matrix. In the center of a sunlit forest clearing, the youth Dafni — dressed in a short white chiton, interwoven sandals, and an emerald-green himation draped over the shoulder — is shown kneeling on a mossy rock while playing the pastoral flute with absorbed concentration. The poetic core of the scene resides in the distant dialogue with the detail on the right: half-hidden among the tall grasses of a golden-hued basin, the blonde Chloe appears in a pale blue dress, one hand raised to her chest in an act of rapt listening. Rendered with a lightness almost incorporeal, the girl seems to materialize from Nature itself as a woodland nymph, embodying the pan-inspired union of amorous awakening, music, and landscape. The composition unfolds along a calibrated visual and sonic diagonal that links the solid figure of Dafni, grounded to the rocks in the foreground on the left, to the ethereal appearance of Chloe on the right, following the direction of the instrument. Space is organized by vertical tree trunks, slender and sinuous, opening to a background range of mountains veiled in mist. The color play is orchestrated in a bright spring symphony: warm tints of ochre yellow, pale gold, and ivory of the meadow and sky converse with cool notes of periwinkle blue, mauve, and pearly grays of bark, stones, and distant peaks, while the intense green of the cloak serves as the chromatic pivot of the whole scene. The brushwork alternates between firm, synthetic modeling in the figure of the youth and a divided, rapid, filamentous touch in the grassy ground and the foliage, conveying the luminous dust and the breeze’s flutter. The work exemplary embodies the Belle Époque poetry of Delavelle, where rigorous academic training blends with the dreamlike atmospheres of Symbolism and the linear elegance of Art Nouveau, evident in the calligraphic arabesque of the branches against the sky. The painting unites two main strands of his production: the educated illustrator’s vein for classical texts — which had already yielded notable editorial studies on Dafni and Chloe — with the experience of the plein air landscapist matured on the Riviera, whose luminous Mediterranean splash is transfigured into a mythical Helen of motionless time. Characterized by great freshness of execution and evocative charm, the painting constitutes a precious testament to Delavelle’s easel work. CONDITION REPORT Good overall condition. Work intact in every part with vivid and legible color, brushwork. The photograph of the painting placed in an artificial setting is generated by artificial intelligence and should be regarded as purely illustrative. Only the remaining photographs are valid, as they faithfully show the object and its features, both general and detail. Tracked and insured shipping with appropriate packing.
