Toutes les enchères / Autres / Henri Matisse (1869-1954) (after) - "Nu Bleu III, 1952"
- Henri Matisse (after), offset lithograph on heavy-weight textured matte paper (approx. 300gsm, refers to paper thickness/density). - Signed in the plate. - Embossed stamp. - Stamp on verso. - Condition: excellent. Never framed, never exposed. - Size: 43 x 56,5cm. - Nu Bleu III (1952) by Henri Matisse is one of the most iconic images from the artist’s celebrated late period, when he transformed paper cut-outs into a radical new language of colour, rhythm and modern simplicity. With its intense ultramarine blue and elegant white negative space, the composition reduces the female nude to pure form, movement and balance, creating one of the most recognisable silhouettes in twentieth-century modern art. The work belongs to Matisse’s famous Blue Nudes series, created after illness limited his ability to paint in the traditional way. Rather than diminishing his creativity, this period gave rise to some of his boldest and most influential works. The figure in Nu Bleu III combines sensuality and abstraction through a few decisive shapes, placing Matisse in direct dialogue with Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Léger, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder and Jean Arp, while also anticipating later minimalist and graphic approaches to the human body. The extraordinary power of Nu Bleu III lies in its apparent simplicity. The blue figure appears both monumental and fragile, decorative and deeply modern. Its clean composition, strong contrast and timeless elegance make it especially desirable for lovers of modern art prints, female nude studies, abstract figuration, vintage-inspired interiors, minimalist wall decor and sophisticated contemporary design. The work also connects naturally with later artists such as David Hockney, Mark Rothko, Pierre Soulages, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, all of whom explored the emotional and visual force of colour in very different ways. Matisse’s cut-outs remain highly relevant in today’s collecting trends, where bold colour, organic shapes and refined simplicity continue to dominate interior design. The graphic strength of Nu Bleu III also resonates with the contemporary visual impact of Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Karl Lagasse, Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons, artists whose works share a similar ability to become instantly recognisable cultural images. Within today’s wider collecting culture where fine art, vintage design, luxury names such as Rolex, Patek Philippe and Cartier, and popular icons like Star Wars, Pokémon and Lego can coexist in curated interiors Matisse’s blue nudes retain a unique artistic prestige. Their purity of form and decorative intelligence make them ideal for modern homes, design-led spaces, art walls and elegant interiors seeking a timeless yet contemporary statement. A refined image, Nu Bleu III embodies the essence of Matisse’s late genius: colour reduced to emotion, line transformed into movement and the female figure reimagined as pure modern form.
