Henri Endlich (1886–1948) - Paysage hollandais au moulin

Henri Endlich (1886–1948) — Dutch Landscape with Windmill Oil on canvas. Signed. An attractive landscape by Dutch painter Henri Endlich (1886–1948), a pseudonym linked to Henri Welter, who also worked as an art dealer. The Getty ULAN records him as a Dutch painter and dealer, born in 1886 and died in 1948, and also lists the name Henri Welter. Other sources in the Dutch market also identify Henri Endlich as a pseudonym of Henri Welter. The work depicts a characteristic Dutch riverside landscape, with a rural building by the water and a windmill receding into the distance. The presence of these elements situates the composition within the Dutch landscape tradition that Endlich repeatedly cultivated. The composition is built through a marked sequence of planes. In the foreground extends the surface of the water, speckled with reeds and reflections; on the right bank is the cluster of houses surrounded by trees and vegetation, while the small windmill on the left serves as a counterpoint and guides the eye toward the horizon. What stands out especially is the wide blue sky, occupied by large white and grayish clouds. The painter reserves a substantial portion of the composition for the sky, thus increasing the sense of expansiveness typical of the Netherlands landscape. The brushwork is loose and visible, especially in the vegetation, the waters, and the reflections. The color range combines light blues and slightly pinkish whites with dark greens, earth tones and browns, introducing small color accents in the figures and elements located near the dwelling. Stylistically, the work is related to the continuity during the early decades of the 20th century of the Dutch landscape tradition linked to the Hague School, particularly for its interest in canals, polders, rural buildings and atmospheric effects. Existing documentation on Endlich indeed shows a recurring production of Dutch landscapes, rural scenes and bodies of water. The painting bears the signature in the lower left corner. About Henri Endlich Henri Endlich (1886–1948) was a Dutch painter and dealer. The Getty Research Institute, based on RKD data, records Endlich, Henri as a Dutch painter and dealer, and lists Henri Welter as an associated name. His known production is especially related to the Dutch landscape: canals, boats, farms, polders and rural scenes. Numerous examples of this theme are preserved in market records, including landscapes with vessels, farms and water views. There is, however, some complexity surrounding works marketed under this signature: Dutch documentation notes that Henri Welter used the maternal surname Endlich and that, in his dealer activity, some paintings by other artists may have been marketed under this signature. Therefore, in the absence of specific provenance documentation, it is advisable to catalog the works by the signature and the traditional attribution to Henri Endlich. Condition The work presents a condition in line with its age. Craquelure is evident in various areas of the pictorial surface, in addition to the usual signs of aging. The photographs are an integral part of the description and should be consulted carefully to assess the current state of the painting. The work is presented in an elaborate historicist frame. IMPORTANT ABOUT THE FRAME The frame shown in the photographs is provided solely as a GIFT with the work. The frame is not part of the lot for valuation purposes, has no commercial value attributed, and is included only as a courtesy to the buyer. Consequently, any possible damage, breakage, loss of molding or damage suffered by the frame during transport cannot be grounds for complaint or affect the valuation of the acquired work. The work will be carefully packed in professional manner, using appropriate materials to provide maximum protection during transport. IMPORTANT: shipments to islands, overseas territories or destinations requiring customs procedures may incur additional transport, handling and/or customs costs, which will be borne by the buyer.
